Now it’s about to become a phenomenon once again, as its creator Matt Groening has been tapped to direct a live-action film version of the show.

Groening will be directing The Simpsons: The Animated Series, which he describes as a live action animated film that will “revisit the story and set the stage for a return of the original characters.”

The film is set for release in 2018.

Groening is currently the director of the hit animated series Futurama, which won two Emmy Awards, and he’s also executive producer on the forthcoming feature film The Simpsons Animated Series: The Movie, which will star Matt Groenfield and Sarah Chalke.

Groenfields wife and co-creator, Anna Friel, is set as the film’s star.

The Simpsons: Tapped, a live animated film about Groening’s animated TV show, is being directed by Groening and will star Chalke, Matt Groenhart, and Sarah Hirsch.

The film will be shot in Los Angeles and feature an ensemble cast of characters including a group of teens, an old woman, and a bunch of robots.
